Two Life Lessons
College life is crazy. And fun. And busy. And just plain amazing. (And I was only there one semester. ;) ) But college also teaches you more than what's in the textbooks. The lessons learned outside of the classroom are the ones that impacted me the most. So here's two life lessons that I learned in my first semester at Maranatha Baptist University.
2) Communication is key in any relationship.
Ok, everyone knows this. Whenever someone would tell me this, I'd respond inwardly with, "Yeah, okay, whatever." But it's true! You don't really understand that statement until you've lived it. I had so much friction with certain people because of miscommunication or just bad communication in general. Communication is very important.
On a spiritual note, it's easy to get wrapped up in the business of college life and completely miss communicating with your Heavenly Father. There were days when I didn't have my devotions first thing in the morning. And the day suffered. My day would go infinitely better when I was able to begin the day in God's Word and had spent time talking to Him. Of course, I would talk to Him throughout the day (at times talking out loud in my empty dorm room), but my day was so much better when I had spent time in God's Word first.
1) You are never alone.
This may sound ridiculous seeing as you're surrounded by people 24/7. But even at college you can feel alone. With college comes difficulty. Whenever you go through difficulty in life, it's easy to feel alone. It's easy to feel like you're the only one struggling. You look around and think that everyone else's lives are running smoothly. You tend to forget the big picture and that you're not alone. This is why college is so good. You're with a ton of people who are in your age bracket. These people struggle too. These are people who are struggling with that same issue or that same situation. Similar, yet different, our trials ultimately bring us closer as a body of believers and closer to God. It's unbelievable how encouraging it is to hear that you're not alone in your struggle. It's encouraging in the fact that as they share what God has taught/is teaching them, you learn something as well. It's encouraging in the fact that their lives aren't perfect. They're people just like you. Just like me. Real people with real struggles.
I met some amazing people while at MBU. As the semester came to a close, I asked four of these people to share their hearts and write a post for my blog. So, in the month of June, I'm going to do one guest post a week. These are real people with real struggles. I'm excited to share with you what they have to say. Like I said, they're amazing. :)
